Cristine Sommer-Simmons: A Fearless Female Motorcyclist
This is the second piece following Cannonball Motorcycle rider, Cristine Sommer-Simmons. For those of you who missed last week’s newsletter, click here to read the original article.
Out of 61 riders in the Cannonball Endurance Run, Cristine Sommer-Simmons is one of only two female entrants. While some may find that ratio intimidating, it is nothing new for Cris, who has been pushing the gender boundaries in motorcycling for years.
Cris got her first taste of motorcycling as a passenger on the back of her stepfather’s Honda 750. At the age of 15 she received her first motorcycle, and finally had the chance to ride on her own. Cris learned to ride her street bike in the dirt, and at the time, she was the only girl racing with the boys. Back then, Cris was labeled as a tom boy. Many people assumed that she learned motorcycling from her 5 brothers, but in fact, it was just the opposite; Cris taught 4 of her brothers how to ride.
Cris established herself as an independent female motorcyclist, and at the age of 19 she purchased her first Harley-Davidson, a 1977 Sportster. Through the Harley-Davidson dealership she met other like-minded women, and together they organized the second chapter of the Women in the Wind organization. Cris then went on to co-found Harley Women magazine in 1985.
The magazine was the perfect way for Cris to combine her passion for writing and motorcycling. She would ride across the country for her stories, which is also how she met her husband, Pat Simmons- a motorcycle enthusiast and a member of the Doobie Brothers.
The couple wed in 1989, which is where Cris got her entry number for the Cannonball Endurance Run, 89. The bike that she will ride in September has been in her husband’s motorcycle collection for many years, but it had not been started until recently.
By taking part in the historic Motorcycle Cannonball, Cris continues to pave the way for women motorcyclists. She is excited to compete in the male dominated ride, and at A.D. Farrow Co. we are proud to be her sponsor. We have tremendous faith that Cris will successfully complete the trans-continental ride. Perhaps, she might even beat some of the men.
For now, Cris is training mentally and physically in preparation for the long hours that will be required of her in September. During the ride she will have an all-girl support team traveling along-side her every step of the way. Would you have expected an all-boy support team? ....Neither did we.
