Cannonball Endurance Run

Have you ever imagined what life was like before 1916? It brings us back to a time when social networking meant dinner parties and face to face interactions, and mail was handwritten and hand delivered.

Amidst the vast noticeable changes of the past 94 years, some things have remained the same.

This September, more than 60 riders have entered the Cannonball Endurance Run. The Cannonball Endurance Run is a transcontinental race starting in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina and ending in Santa Monica, California. Sounds simple enough until you learn the catch: the ride must be completed on a pre-1916 motorcycle!

The Cannonball Endurance Run is named after Erwin “Cannonball” Baker who set 143 riding records from 1910 until 1940. This ride uniquely challenges its participants. Despite modern technology and conveniences, riders will endure the same struggles as pre-1916 motorcyclists.

Cris Sommer SimmonsWhile the general concept of the ride is definitely intriguing, A.D. Farrow Co. Harley-Davidson, is specifically interested in Motorcycle Cannonball Rider No.  89, Cristine Sommer-Simmons.

Some of you may recognize the name from her popular book, The American Motorcycle Girls: A Photographic History of Early Women Motorcyclist. Cris is one of only two women competing in an otherwise all-male field, and we at A.D. Farrow Co. Harley-Davidson are proud to be her sponsor.

Cris will be riding a Harley-Davidson from 1915 which she nicknamed “Effie,” in honor of Effie Hotchkiss. Effie and her mother, Avis, were the first women to ride across the United States in 1915. The motorcycle that Cris will ride is the same make and model as the one that Effie rode nearly a century ago.

HawaiiIn the weeks leading up to the ride, A.D. Farrow Co. will keep you updated on Cris’s progress. Be sure to read the coming newsletters to learn more about Cris and her bike, “Effie” as they gear up for this historic event!

movie ticketIt is not uncommon for adults to pay upwards of $10 for a single movie ticket. By the time you factor in popcorn, candy, and soda, a movie for two could be nearly $30! Many new movies have an additional charge for a pair of 3-D glasses that the theater makes you return two hours later! Want a better way to enjoy a great movie without having to break the bank?

Join A.D. Farrow Co. Harley-Davidson Shop at NorthStar Saturday, August 7, 2010, for our “Moto Movie” event. We invite all of you to our open-air cinema to watch the feature film, The Blind Side.

PopcornThe movie will be projected on a 26 foot screen out by the lake, directly behind the NorthStar dealership. There is plenty of parking for cars and motorcycles, so make sure to bring your family and friends. Most importantly the movie is FREE of charge! Also, JR’s Chicks and Hogs will be at the event selling hotdogs, popcorn, soda, candy, and of course, their signature barbecue.

Ride-in starting at 7pm for games and relaxation out back. Cartoons will play on screen until it is dark, at which point we will switch over to the feature presentation.
